Alkimi The Good Earth Syrah 2014

This is the first of a couple of impressive Rhône style wines from small producer Alkimi.  The 2014 "The Good Earth" syrah tasted here is from the Warramunda vineyard in Coldstream in the Yarra Valley.  It sees 1/3 whole bunch and no new oak.  It is all handled rather well, so these stylistic choices are not obvious.  In the glass, the '14 syrah has cool climate plum, pepper and spice aromatics.  The palate has soft but quite long length, with subtle pepper characters and an attractive elegance and balance.
