Château Les Hauts-Conseillants Lalande de Pomerol 2009

If you take any message away from my various writings, let it be this: if you have any inclination towards the wines of Bordeaux, buy as much of the 2009 vintage as you can afford.  Wine after wine from this vintage, at all prices and levels, are proving to be outstanding.  And this wine is another of them.

From the Lalande de Pomerol appellation, it is a blend of 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc.  It's a blend that seldom works in Australian soil yet on Bordeaux's right bank, the combination effortlessly delivers deliciousness, sometimes with an ever so slight expression of rusticity.  Deeply coloured, the 2009 vintage of Château Les Hauts-Conseillants has very attractive aromatics of blackberry, blackcurrant, cedar, spice, toast and coffee grinds.  The palate has long length and its flavours resemble its nose.  While perhaps lacking some power through the middle on the second day, its long length and first impressions more than make up for it.
