Izway Wines Bruce Shiraz 2012

Izway Wines is the project of Brian Conway and Craig Isbel.  Their stated approach is that the vineyard is more important than the winemaker, and this ethos shows in the wine.  Grapes are sourced  for the 2012 vintage of the "Bruce" from the "Schubert Block 3" and "Kalleske" vineyards.  The vine age is around 16 years and the vines are planted on red clay soils, with some ironstone and sandy loam.  In the winery, the wine sees maturation in only 10% new French oak, fermentation is started  naturally and then inoculated with cultured yeasts, acid additions limited to the extent possible, there is no fining or filtering and no added tannins.  They are trying, in other words.

The result in the glass is a very pure fruited expression of Barossan shiraz.  The aromatics are lifted and remind of prunes, dried bushland scrub and cherry liqueur.  The alcohol level at 15.6% is on the high side, although it does not throw the balance of the wine off and I did not note the acidity as high or jarring, which is a good thing in context.  Therefore, I think the wine has been handled well.  In terms of flavours, the wine reminds of stewed plums and prunes, supplemented by gentle dried spices.  Fine grained tannins assert themselves with time in the glass, and the impression here is of a very pure fruited style of Barossan shiraz that is a little closed at the moment, but should relax with bottle age.
