Rochford Syrah 2012

Rochford's 2012 syrah (100%) is a pretty interesting sort of a wine.  Purple in colour, its aromatics are pungent and quite youthful, and remind of stems, twigs, plums and earth, the first two a result perhaps of the 10% whole bunch fermentation.  On the palate, this is a wine that needs some time in the glass to open up.  The palate starts with a bitterness, but with air, relaxes to reveal a subtle expression of plum, plum skins, spice, chewy tannins and high acid.  The 20% new French oak is handled deftly, and there's medium length on the finish, which also developed layers with time in the glass.  Overall, there's complexity and length here, and the result is an interesting wine that should improve in the cellar for a couple of years.  I can see why it stood out enough to win a gold medal at the Sydney wine show.  Good
