Marchesi Alfieri La Tota Barbera d'Asti 2011

Barbera from Piemonte is currently filling my gap for quality savoury wine in the mid $20s price bracket.  This particular example from Marchesi Alfieri from Barbera d'Asti is a bit more expensive at $35.  It's a very deep ruby in colour, with aromatics of chocolate, sour cherry and anise.  The palate has reminders of plums and earth.  It is savoury, has medium length and light tannins.  Overall a very pleasant wine that will reward immediate drinking.  A perfect pizza wine.
