Calmel & Joseph Les Terroirs Côtes du Roussillon Villages 2011

This is the last of the new release reds from Calmel & Joseph, and is a syrah, grenache and carignan blend from the Côtes du Roussillon Villages appellation.  This appellation is situated in the far south of France not far from the mediterannean Spanish border, and surrounds surprisingly enough, the Roussillon subregion.  The wine itself is another balanced offering from this négociant, with aromatics of chalk, mulberry, tar, anise, cooked blackberry and salami.  The palate (which is of course dry) traverses savoury and sweet fruited characters, with earth, redcurrant, mulberry and red meats all present.  Chalky tannins finish things off to give a balanced wine with good length.
