Domaine Durand Les Couteaux Saint-Joseph 2008

I thought this syrah to be a pretty good effort for the price.  It is bright in the glass, with a medium intensity ruby colour and tears evident.  The wine has medium intensity and developing aromatics of vanilla, cedar, powdery wood, plums and pepper.  The palate is dry, with medium-high acid, slightly drying tannins and flavours reminding of cherry, plum, earth, pepper and dried herbs (mostly rosemary and thyme) and a medium length finish.  The quality here is good due to the balance of acid, alcohol and fruit flavours of cherry, plum and earth, and although the oak was initially prominent, it integrated well with the wine with air, and the flavours presented were balanced with some evidence of complexity.  Good
