Monument Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Monument Vineyard Nebbiolo 2011 and Monument Vineyard Shiraz 2012

Monument Vineyard is a new label with its vineyard situated in Cudal around 30 kilometres west of Orange.  A claim to the geographical indication region of "Orange" is not made on the bottles tasted here, and a quick look at the geographical boundaries here suggests that this may be because the vineyard is only entitled to the larger geographical indication of the "Central Ranges" zone.  But I am happy to stand corrected.

Of the three red current releases reviewed here, I thought the shiraz was of most interest, with a black pepper character reminding of good quality Great Western shiraz.  The cabernet sauvignon is sound, and the nebbiolo a bit variable.

Monument Vineyard Shiraz 2012
Monument Vineyard has fashioned quite an interesting shiraz here.  Aromatics of cracked pepper and green peppercorns, the palate is dry, a mix of pepper and plums and has some good length and structure.  This enjoyable and good quality wine is balanced in expression with some fruit concentration that will appeal.  It is ready to drink now and over the next few years.  Good

Monument Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Monument Vineyard's cabernet sauvignon from the 2011 vintage has a medium to pronounced intensity ruby in colour.  Aromatics of bay leaf, dark confected plums, earth, anise and wood spice.  The palate is dry, has medium to high acid, and expressions of tomato leaf, bay leaf, earth, wood spice, slightly astringent bitter tannins and short length.  This acceptable quality wine is mostly balanced and shows sound varietal character if lacking some depth and length and more or less hits its price point.  Acceptable

Monument Vineyard Nebbiolo 2011
Monument Vineyard's 2011 nebbiolo has a light to medium intensity strawberry in colour.  The wine opens to some unusual aromas of hops, barley, earth and sulphur.  The palate is dry, initially quite spritzy, with nigh on unapproachable pronounced tannins, and flavours of cherry.  The wine settled on the second day, with more balance in its expression, and fewer odd aromatics and the spritzy character resolved.  Overall, quality is acceptable here, and there was an improvement with aeration suggesting that decanting is a must, although the hefty tannins typical of the grape remained very noticeable.  Acceptable
