Balgownie Estate Shiraz 2009

Balgownie Estate's Bendigo vineyards have continued to produce very good and fairly priced cabernet sauvignon and shiraz wines over the years.  Wines that can be critically recommended without the suffocating advance of doubt.  Their 1976 cabernet still leaves in my mind a haunting impression of beauty and potential.

The list price has crept up over the years, but you can still find this wine for mid $30s without looking particularly hard.  The 2009 vintage shiraz - from the last year of the Victorian drought and a tough year for many - is a very good wine indeed.  A complex nose.  Game, savoury, leather, spices, cloves, tinned peppercorn, dried tobacco leaf and lactic oak.  A lot of verbage, but the aromas are there.  Medium to long length, tannins that are fine grained and show promise of age and melt.  A wine to savour over the next 10 years.  Very Good
