Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz 2004

At around $19 for the current vintage, Penley Estate's Hyland shiraz is a pretty good buy. The 2004 vintage has a recommended drinking window of 1-5 years, but is performing soundly at 11 years of age.

A deeply coloured purple in colour, the 2004 has a brooding aroma of pepper, dried mixed herbs, tar and old wood. The palate is medium-full bodied with some spiced plums and nice balance with a touch of persistence. Perhaps it had a touch of spirit, but that would be nit picking only. This ready to drink wine is quite expressive, and typical of Coonawarra shiraz, reminding me of the Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra shiraz; only cheaper.  G
